The Whip

A whip
The whip is probably the tool of the "trade" that most comes to mind. The whip was primary used as punishment for a wrongdoing that the slave did. The whip was also used to speed up a slave who was not working hard enough. If the slave committed a serious offense, his or her owner would sometimes whip the slave to a death cause by loss of blood.

Clothing

Your average field slave would often be clothed rather badly. They were dressed lightly as they didn't need heavy clothing in the south. Their clothes were made out of rough cloth that  they either made themselves or their masters made them. As you can see in the picture, their master didn't care for their well being.

Farm Tools

Slaves used a variety of tools in their farm work. They used hand tools that many people recognize today and associate with hard work. The hoe, the shovel, the sickle, and the plow are just a few of the simple tools that slaves had been using for hundreds of years. In the later years of American slavery, new more complex tools were invented that caused a craving for slaves that could not be sated. The threshers, factories, and the most important the cotton gins are just a few. These new "toys" were all born causing the industrial revolution and a want for more slaves creating a cycle that could not be stopped until it cracked the Union in half.
