Conditions
A model slave ship cut open so insides are visible
The slave ships used for the slave trade were typical merchant ships. The middle sections were used to hold the slaves and the bottom (the hold) was used to carry their food and water. The conditions on these slave ships were horrible. The slaves were chained down on the deck and to each other for the most part of their journey; the parts of the ship that they were chained to were horrendously dirty due to the fact they were rarely cleaned. Because of these conditions, millions of African slaves died on their journey to the Americas.
